Inventory Availability

Why Shopify Products Show Out of Stock When Inventory Exists at Another Location

Why products show sold out when inventory exists elsewhere

Shopify only counts inventory from locations that are allowed to fulfill online orders. If a store holds units but is not set up for online fulfillment, those units do not appear as available online — so the product looks sold out.

Online fulfillment location eligibility

Check each location's settings for fulfilling online orders. A location that is disabled for online fulfillment still tracks stock, but that stock will not support online sales.

Inventory quantities and commitments

Available quantity excludes units already committed to unfulfilled orders. A location may show units on hand while none are actually available to sell.

Shipping profiles and fulfillment configuration

Shipping profiles define which locations can ship which products to which zones. A product not assigned to a profile that includes the stocked location can be unavailable for checkout in some regions.

Centralized eCommerce fulfillment

Many retailers ship online orders from one designated location. This keeps operations simple, but once that location reaches zero, eligible store stock sits unused for online demand.

Ways to address it

  1. Review location fulfillment settings and shipping profiles.
  2. Confirm committed quantities and recent counts.
  3. Use Virtual Inventory to let selected store stock support online orders without enabling store fulfillment.
  4. Set inventory buffers so stores keep the units they need.
  5. Use automated transfers to move stock to the fulfillment location once an order lands.
  6. Handle edge cases with Order Exceptions when a store cannot fulfill a sourced unit.

Order Exceptions

If a sourcing store cannot provide a unit — for example, after a miscount — an Order Exception flags the order so the team can reroute or resolve it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Shopify say out of stock when a store has units?
Usually that store is not enabled for online fulfillment, its units are committed, or the product's shipping profile excludes that location.
Should every store be enabled for online fulfillment?
Not necessarily. Some retailers prefer one fulfillment location; Virtual Inventory lets eligible store stock support online orders while keeping centralized fulfillment.
What happens if a store cannot provide a sourced unit?
FC Collects raises an Order Exception so the team can reroute or resolve the order.
